Nerd Base

When this came across my Dashboard I was just about done watching Ghost In The Shell - Stand Alone Complex for the Nth time. I laughed and laughed. Then I cried and cried, contemplating my pathetic state of being.

Kidding about that last bit.

Finished watching …2nd Gig (again, for the Nth time… If I were to really think about it, I’m guessing I’ve watched both series in their entirety about six times. The main feature film somewhere between 15 and 20 times.) last night. And now I’m about to watch …Solid State Society (it’s either four or five times now).

Put on my alchemist hat and took a banana, milk, and blender to a Large Iced Blended Dark Chocolate I picked up from The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf earlier tonight. It tastes heavenly. I’m so excited. I’m about to go to Nerd Base with myself.

Story of my life.

[For the inquiring mind, if you wanted to dive headfirst into the world of Ghost In The Shell you shouldn’t have a problem, provided you have Netflix streaming access. Sadly they don’t offer an original Japanese audio track, which I always opt for when it comes to anime, but the English dubs in these cases are actually quite good. Well, I suppose that’s relative. If you ever listened to a bad English dub from an anime property you’d probably think these GITS dubs were the living end. It all depends. Anyway, you wanna go with the feature film first: Ghost In The Shell, which exists within an alternate timeline from the next selections, but it was the first and it’ll provide some background to some of the characters within the series as a whole and familiarize you with the world they exist in (even though the feature film takes place in Hong Kong, and the anime exists in Japan. Sigh). Also, I think only the “2.0” version of the GITS film is available on Netflix, which is virtually the same as the original except with revamped CGI elements. Next up is Ghost In The Shell - Stand Alone Complex, 26 half-hour episodes. Then Ghost In The Shell - Stand Alone Complex - 2nd Gig, another 26 half-hour episodes. And finally the Stand Alone Complex feature film, …Solid State Society. You’ll also find …Laughing Man and …Individual Eleven “films” on Netflix, but skip them, they’re re-edits of the first and second season of Stand Alone Complex, respectively. They attempt to create films from the overarching storyline from their respective seasons by excising the “filler” episodes. But I don’t think… well, I don’t want to get into all that, just watch the series as a whole. Oh, and I’d be a whore if I didn’t mention the original manga. Oddly enough, given what a stickler/neurotic I am for chronology, I’d suggest reading the manga after all the anime. It doesn’t do a good job of setting up the world of GITS… and honestly, I just don’t think it lives up to the anime. ]
